Culture Columnist “2011” is a new song by the band 5 Seconds of Summer, released on December 3, 2021 to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. It has many references to their other songs like “Nothing lasts forever/And nothing stays the same,” a reference to their song “Wherever You Are” on their first EP. “2011” is about looking back on their lives in 2011, which were much simpler according to them. In 2011, which is when they started the band, they were just teenage boys living in Australia. For their anniversary, they made podcast episodes breaking down each year they were a band starting with 2011. Band members Luke Hemmings, Ashton Irwin, Michael Clifford, and Calum Hood explained how it all started and how they all met. They even explained how they shot to fame in 2013. It was interesting to see how they became so successful. They uploaded all their podcast episodes to YouTube, and some of the episodes were animated. Some episodes had quotes that they said in them, which was funny. It was interesting to see them discuss growing up in the spotlight from teenagers to young men, as they are all in their twenties now. They also did a live show that they recorded and posted on YouTube. It featured all their songs, new and old, like “She Looks So Perfect,” “Gotta Get Out,” “Amnesia,” and “Outta My Limit”. They performed “2011” for the first time too. They added in some clips of them performing various songs over the years. They even had some funny skits in the show that served as commercials. Fans that have been following them since the early days will appreciate these nostalgic clips. Additionally, they each did solo interviews for the camera where they discussed their experiences in the band. 5SOS fans or people nostalgic of 2011 times should check out these new releases!
