Red TV: Could You Be The One?
Last week Taylor Swift released a new chapter of her Red (Taylor’s Version) era called Red TV: Could You Be The One? It includes songs like “Starlight (Taylor’s Version),” “State Of Grace (Taylor’s Version),” “Treacherous (Taylor’s Version),” and much more. There are 6 songs in this new chapter. These are not new songs, but rather rerecorded versions of her old hits. My favorite songs in this new chapter are “Message In A Bottle,” “Treacherous (Taylor’s Version),” and “State Of Grace (Taylor’s Version).” I think she picked some good songs for her EP. “Everything Has Changed (Taylor’s Version)” is her song with her best friend, Ed Sheeran. Sheeran is another singer from the UK. He met Taylor when they both went to a songwriting session in Phoenix, Arizona. At the session, they ate burgers together and became good friends. Taylor released four chapters for her last re-released album, Fearless (Taylor’s Version), so it is not new for her to release chapters. However, nobody knew about this new chapter because she didn’t promote it. She didn’t even post about it on Instagram. Nobody knows why or how, but some people still knew about it. For example, people somehow knew about it on TikTok. I found out about it there. One of the songs on the new chapter, “Message In A Bottle,” is about a long distance relationship. It is rumored to be about Connor Kennedy because Swift and Kennedy dated in the summer of 2012, which is when she wrote this song. It talks about green eyes and freckles, which is what he has. It has never been heard before until now because it is a song that her record label didn’t let her release. Now, she released all her old songs from the vault on her re-released albums. “Everything Has Changed” also has lyrics about green eyes and freckles. This song also references Hyannis Port, which is where Swift and Kennedy spent the Fourth of July that summer.

Culture Columnist The Harry Potter Reunion Special premiered on HBO Max on New Year’s Day, and it is a very fun experience for Potterheads to see their favorite actors reunite on the set of their favorite film series. It was especially fun and very nostalgic for fans to see the Golden Trio (Daniel, Rupert, and Emma AKA Harry, Ron, and Hermione) back together in the Gryffindor common room. They all look very different now; Emma has a pixie haircut and Dan and Rupert both have beards. Rupert also has a baby now with his girlfriend. Another moment that fans loved in the reunion was the hug between Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger). It was so cute when they hugged! For years fans have shipped them together romantically but they have always said they are just close friends. The shipping started because Emma admitted she had a crush on Tom when she was 11. However, it ended because he said she was like a little sister to him. Now they are close friends and he has said he is very protective of her. In the reunion, they said they love each other as close friends. An aspect that fans loved was the friendship between Helena Bonham Carter and the rest of the cast, specifically the Daniel Radcliffe and Helena Bonham Carter moments. The reunion showed a moment where they both ran up to each other and hugged on the set of Gringotts. Then she challenged him to a race down the stairs to the Lestrange vault while she shouted “We’re snogging down here!” It was hilarious! She also made Dan read a letter that he wrote her on set. It said “Dear HBC, it was a pleasure being your co-star and coaster in the sense that I always ended up holding your coffee. I do love you, and I just wish I’d been born ten years earlier. I might’ve been in with a chance. Lots of love, and thanks for being cool.” He laughed and blushed at the note when he read it. By Remy Zerber
Culture Columnist The Weeknd a.k.a. Abel Makkonen Tesfaye is a Canadian singer-songwriter. He just released a new album called Dawn FM a few weeks ago. The album name is a good follow-up from his last record because the name means morning, whereas his last album was called After Hours, which means night. Dawn FM is about love, beauty, and death. His song “Every Angel Is Terrifying” is about how angels are portrayed as beautiful beings in mainstream media, but, in the bible, they are terrifying to look at. I interpret this song to be saying that there is not only one side to a person and people have many sides to their personalities. The album is a radio concept album. It is mostly about death and The Weeknd killing his past After Hours self. The album cover is a picture of him in prosthetic makeup to make him look old. One theory as to why he did this is that he is showing that aging and dying are inevitable since the album is mostly about death. Another theory is that it stands in contrast to the After Hours cover where he looks very youthful. It is also rumored that there will be a third album to complete the trilogy called After Life. There have been many rumors surrounding the songs on the album. One of the songs, “I Heard You’re Married,” is rumored to be about Ariana Grande because she has been friends with The Weeknd for years and there is speculation that they dated before she married Dalton Gomez. It could also be about Selena Gomez or Bella Hadid because they were confirmed to have dated him, but they are not married so it wouldn’t make sense if it was about them. Another rumor is that “Here We Go…Again” and “Starry Eyes” are about Angelina Jolie because the two were spotted together having dinner last July. The lyrics in “Here We Go…Again” that are speculated to be about her say "And my new girl, she's a movie star / My new girl, she's a movie star.” In “Starry Eyes”, The Weeknd sings "I only met you in my dreams before / When I was young and alone in the world / You were there when I needed someone / To call my girl / And now you're my reality / And I wanna feel you close / But you're defeated, baby." These lyrics fit Angelina because she is a movie star and considered attractive by men. By Remy Zerber
Culture Columnist “2011” is a new song by the band 5 Seconds of Summer, released on December 3, 2021 to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. It has many references to their other songs like “Nothing lasts forever/And nothing stays the same,” a reference to their song “Wherever You Are” on their first EP. “2011” is about looking back on their lives in 2011, which were much simpler according to them. In 2011, which is when they started the band, they were just teenage boys living in Australia. For their anniversary, they made podcast episodes breaking down each year they were a band starting with 2011. Band members Luke Hemmings, Ashton Irwin, Michael Clifford, and Calum Hood explained how it all started and how they all met. They even explained how they shot to fame in 2013. It was interesting to see how they became so successful. They uploaded all their podcast episodes to YouTube, and some of the episodes were animated. Some episodes had quotes that they said in them, which was funny. It was interesting to see them discuss growing up in the spotlight from teenagers to young men, as they are all in their twenties now. They also did a live show that they recorded and posted on YouTube. It featured all their songs, new and old, like “She Looks So Perfect,” “Gotta Get Out,” “Amnesia,” and “Outta My Limit”. They performed “2011” for the first time too. They added in some clips of them performing various songs over the years. They even had some funny skits in the show that served as commercials. Fans that have been following them since the early days will appreciate these nostalgic clips. Additionally, they each did solo interviews for the camera where they discussed their experiences in the band. 5SOS fans or people nostalgic of 2011 times should check out these new releases! Amy Schneider of Oakland hits 1 million on the famous trivia show.
By Madison Sciba Culture Columnist On January 7th, Oakland engineer Amy Schneider hit one million dollars, and now, is the first woman to qualify for the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions. Jeopardy is a long-running trivia show that airs every night, taking a twist on the traditional question and answer format. Schnider, being the third longest-running champion and first transgender person to qualify, has become one of four people in the history of Jeopardy to reach one million dollars. In the 39th season of the show, viewers have seen two contestants rise to the top three longest-running champions. Matt Amodio had an astonishing 38-game run, becoming the second longest-running champion earlier in the season, while Ken Jennings, one of the current game hosts, holds the Jeopardy record for most games. Only five people have ever achieved one million on the show, which Schnider did on January 7th, and only two people have ever reached two million in the game, Jennings and James Holtzhauer. However, Schneider beat Holtzhauer’s 32-day run on January 17th. Schneider becomes the first woman and first trans person to join the Jeopardy million-dollar club, but still has a long way to go to get to Jenning’s record of 74 consecutive games. After the death of beloved host Alex Trebeck in November of 2020, former Big Bang Theory actress, Mayim Bialik, and record holder Jennings, have shared the job of hosting the show. Seeing as the show has been running since 1964, Schneider’s accomplishments mean a lot. She has been an inspiration for many Jeopardy fans and we are all excited to see how long she can last, as well as the battle between her and Amodio in the 2022 Tournament of Champions. Another beloved actor gone too soon.
By Madison Sciba Culture Columnist Actor Bob Saget passed away on January 9th, 2022 at the age of 65. Saget was best known for his role as TV dad Danny Tanner on the hit 90s sitcom Full House, as well as the recent spin-off, Fuller House. The morning of the 9th, Saget was found unresponsive in his room at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Orlando, Florida. There has been no announcement for the cause of death, however, officials have ruled out foul play and drug use. From 1987 to 1995, Saget played the patriarch of the Tanner family on Full House, one of the most notable shows from the era. The show focused on a widowed father of three girls, Saget, who has his best friend Joey, Dave Coulier, and brother-in-law Jesse, John Stamos, move in to help raise his daughters. The series followed the family through the ups and downs of life. Two of the actresses who played his on-screen daughters, Candace Cameron Bure (DJ) and Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie), both posted on Instagram sharing recent and older photos of themselves with the late actor in remembrance. Fans of the long-running comedy, How I Met Your Mother, would recognize Saget’s voice as the narrator for all 208 episodes, something that has surprised many Full House and How I Met Your Mother fans. Since the end of Full House, Saget has worked on a variety of television shows, as well as appearing as the contestant Squiggly Monster in season 4 of the hit show, The Masked Singer. Unfortunately, he was in the middle of a stand-up comedy tour when he died. Saget’s funeral was held on January 14th and was attended by his friends, family, and Full House co-stars: Stamos, Coulier, Sweetin, Bure, twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who shared the role of Michelle Tanner, and the controversial Lori Loughlin (Aunt Becky). Other noted comedians, such as Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and Judd Apatow, were in attendance. As a lifelong fan of Full House, it is certain that Bob Saget will be greatly missed. A new quarter program is set to begin this year featuring iconic women of US history.
By Isabelle Delostrinos Culture Columnist Calling all quarter collectors! It’s time to brush the dust off those coin books from middle school, a new program is hitting the production line. Starting this month, the United States Mint is introducing the American Women Quarters Program. Every year until 2025, new quarters will be released featuring iconic women from U.S. history. This is amazing news as the iconic women of US history are being given honor and recognition on a nationwide level. Ever since their distribution in 1990, state quarters have become a widely popular collectible item. Each year, five states were selected to be etched onto the tails side of the quarter with production ending once the year was over. Collecting these coins became a scavenger hunt as the years went on, as all you had to do was spend some cash and go through your change to find each state. The simple activity soon became popular and had many people looking closely at their quarters. The first woman to be featured on the coin is celebrated writer, performer, and social activist, Maya Angelou. Her work, often described as honest and creative, has made a lasting imprint on American history. She is widely known as the author behind I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first part of her autobiographical series. Angelou served as the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference per the request of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was also was the first African American woman to write and present a poem at a presidential inauguration in 1992 for President Clinton. The quarter will feature Maya Angelou with her arms raised and uplifted while a rising sun and bird in flight stretch behind her as an ode to how she lived her life. The head’s side will feature a portrait of George Washington composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser. Quarters featuring the following women will also be produced:
Due to the rise of Omicron and the outbreak of Covid-19 cases, the annual Grammy award show has been postponed.
By Isabelle Delostrinos Culture Columnist The 64th Annual Grammy Awards have been postponed due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19 cases from the Omicron variant. The music award show was set to take place in front of Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on January 31st. It was postponed on January 5th, just after the surge in coronavirus cases following the holidays. The decision was made based on the interest of the show production crew and attendees who believed it was best to postpone the show to a later date to ensure the safety of all those involved. Last year’s Grammy award show was held in mid-March once the heat of the pandemic cooled down. The production crew created an outdoor show by setting up a large event tent to ensure the free flow of air and social distancing of attendees. Each nominee was required to wear a mask and was only allowed one guest to the show. Performances were held in a separate building and live audiences were not able to attend. It was not the traditional, extravagant Grammy production but abided by the Covid-19 protocols. As of January 18th, the Recording Academy announced that the show would be held on April 3rd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The later date and smaller arena make for a better environment for the event to be held. With Covid-19 testing becoming more accessible, protocols have a chance at being closely followed by all crewmembers and attendees in this smaller venue. The show will also be live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ for viewers at home. Besides the new date, here are some exciting nominations to look out for this spring. Freshman artist, Olivia Rodrigo, has been nominated for seven awards. She is the only artist of the night to be nominated for all four top categories: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. Her megahit “driver’s license” excelled Rodrigo’s solo debut and brought her to this career-changing moment. This night will definitely be a turning point for her, but it will be up to the Recording Academy to decide. Other artists who dominate popular categories are Justin Bieber with seven nominations and Bay Area native, H.E.R., with eight nominations. By Remy Zerber
