This romantic comedy joins Netflix’s growing list of original holiday movies. Last year the public was graced with The Princess Switch starring Vanessa Hudgens, A Christmas Prince, The Holiday Calendar, Klaus and more. The streaming platform is continuously building up their resume as a producer of content and not just a source for rewatching classic TV shows and movies. They are constantly demonstrating their ability to engage with every type of audience, this time trying to catch the attention of rom-com-holiday cheer movie lovers. Love Hard begins with an aerial view of sunny Los Angeles and an opening dialogue from Natalie, played by Nina Dobrev. Her never-ending quest to find her one true love has unfortunately become her brand as a writer for a trendy LA-based blog. Even her boss won’t let her stop going on horrible dates because of how well people engage with her posts. After she drags a stumpy Christmas tree into her one bedroom apartment, Natalie plops on the couch and opens up Flirt Alert. Surprisingly, Natalie finally comes across an interesting profile and ends up sending him the first message. And just like that, she’s found herself hopelessly in love. It only took the first 15 minutes of the movie for her to risk everything for this new guy. Could this finally be the match for Natalie? Spoiler Alert! This movie may have a scene that could potentially put this movie on the map. Natalie’s progressive philosophy has grown a distaste for the 1950’s Christmas classic, Baby It’s Cold Outside. In recent years, controversy has stirred as many people started to really think about the lyrics of this song. What sounds like a dainty, romantic Christmas carol is really a man not understanding what consent is. As Natalie finds herself stuck in a caroling performance for the eldery, she’s forced to sing this song in front of a crowd. Her duet partner Josh, played by Jimmy O. Yang, begs her to go with flow and surprises her with a new, modern rendition of the song. Here’s a look at the first verse: I really can’t stay No problem there’s the door I’ve got to go away I hear ya, say no more This evening has been Totally consensual So very nice I hope you get home safe tonight What more could we ask of a 21st century holiday rom-com? A journalist with a failed dating life, living in the heart of LA. The difficulties of online dating. The emotional relief best friend who won’t let Natalie give up on love. An updated, millennial version of a Christmas classic. Even Natalie’s lack of enthusiasm for the holidays. Netflix really hit the nail for a cheesy, holiday rom-com. Love Hard was the perfect movie to kick off the holiday season on Netflix. After 2 weeks of releasing, the movie steadily kept its place on the platform’s top 10 list. It is projected that Netflix will be having about 10 more holiday movies to release this year, including The Princess Switch 3. Before even more cheesier and predictable movies come out, check out Love Hard to prepare you for this season.

An Amazing Show in San Jose
By Remy Zerber Culture Columnist Last week, I went to the Harry Styles concert in San Jose with my two friends. It was a night to remember to say the least. Styles is a great singer and performer. In case anyone doesn’t know who he is, Harry Styles is an extremely talented and popular singer. He started off when he auditioned for the X-Factor in the UK, and he got put in a band that would eventually be called One Direction. However, the band went on a hiatus in 2015 and all the members started their solo careers. Harry Styles is a performer who promotes love and kindness. He even has a song called “Treat People With Kindness” about treating people well and making them feel good. He practices this message at every show he does by interacting with the audience. At the show I went to in San Jose, he read a lot of signs that his fans made. He even helped a fan come out of the closet. After he helped the fan come out, he exclaimed “Go forth and conquer on your life of freedom!” He helps fans come out a lot at his shows. He is a big advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. This is just one way he makes fans feel good. People also love his music, which makes them feel good about themselves. When I asked my friend if this was his favorite concert he’s ever been to, he said, “Harry Styles’ was definitely [his] favorite concert that [he’s] ever been to. It was a magical night that [he] wouldn’t be able to recreate with any other artist. His interactivity with the audience was beautiful.” A lot of fans like it when he interacts with them. Harry also loves fashion. He wears something different and colorful for every show he does. People also love this about him. He wore red pants and a shiny, pink shirt for his show in San Jose. For other shows of his tour, he has worn outfits that are every color of the rainbow. He has even worn sparkly outfits like his all-black sparkly outfit that he wore for his show in LA recently. His stylist, Harry Lambert, dresses him for all his events. His colorful outfits show support for the LGBTQ+ community. He even wore a dress when he was on the cover of Vogue magazine. Harry’s lyrics are also a major attraction for people. They are so poetic and some are deeply symbolic like the line "Strawberry lipstick state of mind" from “Adore You.” His second album, Fine Line, has a motif of fruit throughout it, which is the album “Adore You” is from. Another example of the fruit motif is his song “Watermelon Sugar,” which is a happy summer song about the feeling love gives people. “Kiwi” is also a song with a fruit theme that I highly recommend. He even sometimes changes the lyrics to his songs to fit the message he is trying to convey that night. For example, at one of his shows, he sang “Golden” with he/him pronouns instead of she/her pronouns. Unfortunately, I did not get to experience this lyric change because he did not do it at the show in San Jose. He has done lyric changes for his other songs too, even songs from One Direction. Harry and Louis used to change the lyrics to their songs to be about each other all the time. For example, they always used to change the female pronouns in their songs to male pronouns. They did many other lyric changes about other things too. The Harry Styles show was one of the best shows I have ever been to. I had a great time with my friends there. Harry’s interactivity with the audience was so cool to see in person. He is a great singer and performer. He really knows how to entertain the audience. His fashion choices that night were so good. He even shows support for important issues like LGBTQ+ rights. He is not afraid to blur the line between sex and gender because he wore a dress on the cover of Vogue magazine. People also love Harry for his interesting and poetic lyrics in his songs. Harry Styles is a great performer who has something to offer to everyone. The iconic couple calls it quits Remy Zerber Culture Columnist Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid might be broken up for good. Zayn and Gigi have been dating on and off since 2015 (nearly five years) and have recently broken up, for good this time, after Gigi’s mother, Yolanda, accused Zayn of shoving her into a dresser and calling her derogatory names. Zayn is a singer and former One Direction member and Gigi is a famous model. The details of the story of Zayn and Gigi’s break-up are complicated. The official story that got reported by news outlets is that Zayn hit or shoved Yolanda into a dresser because they got into an argument that was caused by Yolanda barging into Zayn and Gigi’s house at night, which is when he works on his music. It has not been confirmed that he hit Yolanda because he denied the claims when she filed a police report against him. Because of the police report, he now has four charges against him and he was also fined and must have no contact with the security guard that was there during the fight, John McMahon, and Yolanda. He must also complete an anger management class and a domestic violence program. Zayn and Gigi have a baby girl named Khai together. Zayn and Gigi have broken up but she still wants him to co-parent Khai because she says Khai needs her father. Bella Hadid, Gigi’s sister, has always disliked Zayn according to some sources. She and her brother, Anwar, unfollowed him after the incident with Yolanda. There are rumors that Bella always disliked Zayn because she was jealous of his relationship with Gigi and thought he ruined her career, but these are just rumors so it has not been confirmed. Yolanda also agrees with Bella that Zayn ruined Gigi’s career because Gigi started knitting and doing housework when she got back together with him last year, which left no time for modeling and attending parties. This made Yolanda furious because she is very protective of her daughter. Zayn’s family seems to think the whole situation is made up because they have been showing their support to him through their Instagram Stories. Some fans agree with them, saying that Zayn would never hit a woman because he has said that he was raised around women so he respects them a lot. Other fans are sad that Zayn and Gigi broke up because they were their favorite celebrity couple. Zayn and Gigi have broken up because of a fight between him and Yolanda. Gigi still wants Zayn to be around because they have to co-parent their daughter together, much to the dismay of Bella and Yolanda. There is a lot of discussion about whether or not the whole situation is made up. Some fans are just sad because their favorite couple broke up.
HBO Max’s The White Lotus is a tropical getaway turned upside down. The series is a culmination of comedy, satire, and never ending drama, and is brilliantly executed in a short span of only 6 episodes.

What is anticipated to be a relaxing, peaceful time away from real-world responsibilities sometimes ends up to be even more stressful than your regular routine. The White Lotus, an HBO Original, is a drama filled, satirical comedy that follows the vacation of a newly wed couple, dysfunctional family, and grieving woman. Their ability to enjoy Hawaii at an exclusive resort fails to eliminate the real problems that they face in their everyday lives. Five star dinners, scuba diving lessons, and ocean views can’t save them from their struggles. The first episode begins with a heavy attention getter. Beginning at the airport, a troubled Shane Patton, played by Jake Lacy, cusses out a friendly retired couple trying to ease his tension. He makes his way to the window as he watches a dead body be boarded onto the plane he would later be getting on. The next scene cuts to a week earlier, where he and his newly wedded wife are on a boat en route to the White Lotus resort. Here, the story introduces the Mossbacher family and their separate family dynamic. The youngest son Quinn is sitting alone fiddling with his electronics while the parents are bonding at the railing of the boat, and older daughter Olivia makes fun of the other guests with her friend Paula. As Olivia gives each person on the boat a fake, outrageous background, a single woman named Tanya McQuoid, played by Jennifer Coolidge, looks blankly out into the ocean. As the boat docks and guests are greeted by the hotel manager, Armond, each of their untypical vacations begin. Contrary to the guest experiences, the hotel staff is just as valued in this show. Strong narratives are created around Armond and the spa manager Belinda. The audience learns the complexities of being a service provider for those in the upper class while dealing with their own problems. Their constant need to put up a front and create an experience for difficult guests makes it more exhausting for them to deal with their lives outside of work. The lives of the staff are woven into the dynamics of the show and serve as a significant factor to the outcome of the show. The storyline of the show triggers an abundance of emotion from the audience. As the vacations unfold and the experiences differ between each character, story writers and producers of the show were able to portray multiple realities into one show. From family problems, to struggles with grief and addiction, The White Lotus represents actual situations that happen in society today. The show features effortless performances from notable actors such as Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria, Alexandra Daddario from the Percy Jackson cinematic series, and Steve Zahn from Daddy Day Care. The cast’s overall talent and chemistry drives the show’s excellence and makes it what it is. The combination of a thoughtfully written story and a talented cast, The White Lotus is definitely a show worth binge watching. They spent hours digging through the Goodwill bins or clothing racks on the hunt for unique vintage pieces. From a perfectly worn pair of Levi’s to rare band tees, finding these items was like looking for a needle in a haystack. As technology progressed and social media came along, vintage enthusiasts witnessed their community grow right in front of their eyes. The quirky and unique themed vintage shops that have lived on Haight Street in San Francisco are now inspiration for many fashion lovers looking to plant their own seed in the culture. During the COVID-19 lockdown, many shops and small businesses were impacted by the restriction of indoor shopping. Without an internet presence and ecommerce platform to sell on, many vendors found themselves struggling to support themselves. The Soso Market was founded in the midst of COVID by Indigo Vintage as a place for vendors to showcase their inventories and make sales in person. What started in a small parking lot in Berkeley and has since grown to become one of the most visited vintage markets in the East Bay. Once a month over 50 local clothing vendors, artists, and makers gather to provide the best finds and deals to fashion and streetwear lovers. From Y2K clothing and jewelry to sneakers and masculine styles, there’s something for everyone at the Soso Market. The traction and popularity of the market has given small businesses on Depop and Instagram a chance to thrive and become something more than they have imagined. Since Soso Market has popped up onto the scene, many vintage curators have taken their hobbies to the next level. Within the last few months, two new vintage shops have opened on Telegraph Avenue. The Sneaker Shop features a wide selection of Nike, Jordan, Yeezy sneakers and more. They also have a collection of vintage clothing closer to the masculine end of the spectrum. This includes items like vintage Nike hoodies, Carhatt jackets and pants, and Levi’s denim. Just a couple doors down is Diffusion Studios. This store heavily focuses on clothing trends that appeal to both feminine and masculine styles. After the openings of these new stores, Soso Market found its permanent brick and mortar on Telegraph as well. The in-house version of the outdoor market is called Soso Supermarket and follows the same structure as the original. Now, shoppers are able to shop local businesses throughout the entire week with special themed three day events throughout the weekends. Culture Columnist Did you know that the nominees for the People’s Choice Awards are chosen by the general public? This is good because it is kind of weird when other celebrities nominate each other for awards. The People’s Choice Awards is an award show that airs on CBS annually. There are many categories at this award show. The People’s Choice Awards are on December 7th this year and feature many categories like the Male Artist of 2021, the Female Artist of 2021, the Group of 2021, and much more. For this article, I am going to explain all the artists that have been nominated for Female Artist of 2021, for anyone who might not know. Adele Adele is not a new artist in the music industry, but she has been taking a break since 2015. However, she has recently come back and is releasing an album on November 19th. It is called 30. The lead single “Easy On Me” has recently been released and fans love it. Billie Eilish Billie Eilish is a fairly new artist in the music industry. She is only 19 years old, but she has won several Grammys for her music. She got her start in 2015 when she recorded and posted the song “Ocean Eyes” on Soundcloud with her brother, Phineas. Since then, she has topped the charts multiple times with her songs. She has also become known for her style. Most of the time, she wears baggy clothes, but occasionally she will wear a dress to an event to surprise her fans. Cardi B Cardi B is a rapper in the music industry who was born and raised in New York City. Her real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, but she goes by Cardi B. She got her start in 2015 when she became famous on Instagram and Vine. She then signed up to be a cast member on the VH1 reality TV show, Love & Hip Hop: New York. She was on the show from 2015 to 2017 before signing with Atlantic Records in February of 2017. She recently released a song with Lizzo called “Rumors” in August. She is also married to her husband, Offset, and they have a daughter named Kulture together. Additionally, they announced that they are expecting their second child together in June on Instagram when Cardi shared a picture from a pregnancy photo shoot with fans. Doja Cat Doja Cat is another rapper from Los Angeles. She started posting songs on Soundcloud as a teenager and eventually got noticed by RCA Records. She signed with them and released her debut studio album, Amala, in 2018. Unfortunately, it didn’t gain any attention. Luckily, she went viral when she made a meme with her song “Moo!” that same year. Her second studio album, Hot Pink, which was released in 2019, reached the top of the Billboard charts. It created hits like “Say So,” which went viral on TikTok. Her 2021 album, Planet Her, produced hits like “Kiss Me More”, “Need to Know” and “You Right”. Halsey Halsey’s real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, but she goes by Halsey. Her debut studio album, Badlands, which was released in 2015, was certified Double Platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), along with her songs “Colors” and “Gasoline.” In 2016, she was featured on The Chainsmokers’ song “Closer”, which topped the charts in ten countries. Her second studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017), had two hits, “Bad at Love” and “Now or Never”, which reached the top 20 of the Billboard charts. Her third album, Manic (2020), became her most successful album yet, with its single “Without Me” becoming her most successful single. Her 2021 album, which is her fourth studio album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power (2021), was something she said she always wanted to make. Megan Thee Stallion Megan Thee Stallion is a rapper that grew up in Texas. She first gained attention when she started posting videos online of her freestyling. Since then, she has signed with 300 Entertainment. Her single "Savage Remix" featuring Beyoncé, and her feature on Cardi B's single "WAP" were her first and second number ones on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. “WAP” provided Megan with her first number one in several other countries and the Billboard Global 200. Olivia Rodrigo Olivia Rodrigo became a huge star when she released her debut single, “Driver’s License”. Shortly after, she released her debut album, Sour and it became a big hit. She has also become friends with her idol, Taylor Swift. She was also on the Disney Channel show, Bizaardvark, as Paige Olivera and the Disney+ show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, as Nini. Saweetie Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, better known as Saweetie, is a rapper who was born in Santa Clara, California but grew up in the Central Valley. She began writing songs when she was 13 years old and started posting covers on Instagram at 16. This earned her the attention of her future manager, Max Gousse. She signed with his record label, Artistry Worldwide. Jesy Nelson from Little Mix is the first member to leave the girl group in pursuit of her solo career. Her debut single “Boyz” is concerning and has landed the star in a blackfishing scandal.

Since their formation in 2011, Jesy Nelson decided that her time working with Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, and Leigh Ann Pinnock had come to an end. After 9 years, Nelson called it quits to pursue her solo career. Little Mix joins groups like Fifth Harmony and One Direction, where a single member takes a leap to make it on their own. But it looks like Nelson’s career differs from Camila Cabello’s or Zayn Malik’s in the sense that her debut single “Boyz” has already received backlash. Little Mix was put together by Simon Cowell on the competition show, X Factor. This strategic move proved Cowell’s expertise in the industry as they became the first group to be a champion of X Factor. Little Mix used the win as momentum and has been entertaining the world ever since. In an interview with Vulture, Nelson dived deep into her intentions of leaving the group, explaining how her personal style and passion never really aligned with the group’s brand. From auditioning as an R&B solo artist to making it in the industry as part of a pop girl group, Nelson felt constrained and stuck doing something that never suited her. Now, Nelson hopes to finally immerse herself into a genre she loves and express herself as she truly feels. Nelson released her debut single “Boyz” on October 7th. Only a few weeks after its release, the music video has already hit over 13 million views on Youtube. Her attempt at incorporating her hip hop and R&B passions into her music backfired as the video instantly received backlash, accusing Nelson of blackfishing. Coined by writer Wanna Thompson, blackfishing is a term used to refer to instances when white public figures adopt styles and aesthetics to appear Black. For example, Nelson first appears in her music video wearing afro-like hair, multiple diamond chains, and a grill, a style originated from Black culture. The male actors and backup dancers are also constantly seen covered in tattoos, durags, and sagging shorts while their mannerisms suggest that they come from the “hood”. Nelson’s lyrics also include problematic lines like “so hood, so good, so damn taboo” when referring to her ideal partner. As a white British person from London, Nelson’s creative direction is concerning. Unfortunately, blackfishing has been and continues to be an issue in the music industry. White public figures gain fame and make profits off of the styles and concepts that originated from Black culture. Meanwhile, Black creators are never acknowledged or taken seriously when they partake in a culture they created. In response to the instant criticism, Nelson defended her work as a celebration of the music she grew up on. What makes matters worse is the blackfishers inability to realize how their positionality and actions affect communities of color. For instance, Australian rapper Iggy Azalea has received backlash regarding blackfishing and cultural appropriation since she entered the scene in 2014. Yet in a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, the rapper avoided questions on the topic stating that there will always be people who don’t like what she does, and there will be people who do. To simply sum up a topic that could go on and on, we need to continue to hold artists and public figures accountable for blackfishing and cultural appropriation. Our generation’s ability to utilize social media as a platform for awareness will only progress our culture and societal norms. In the future, I am interested to see how Nelson recovers her solo career from this single. James Michael Taylor, who portrayed Gunther, in the iconic 90s TV Show, passed away at the age of 59

You may also have seen him in shows like Scrubs and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as well as other shows and movies that he’s been in throughout his career. But most TV viewers knew Tyler as the barista who made snarky comments and was Rachel’s secret admirer. James Michael Taylor, who brought this character to life, passed away peacefully in his home this past Sunday. He was fifty-nine. His representative, Toni Benson, says that he passed away after battling prostate cancer since 2018. According to Benson, Tyler had first revealed that he had stage four prostate cancer in June when he was on NBC’s, The Today Show. He mentioned that doctors had found the cancer during a normal physical exam when he was fifty-six. Reportedly, it had spread to his bones, making him unable to walk, so he was treated with hormone therapy to help. “The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh "Friend"), from the hit series Friends, but Michael's loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband,” Benson’s statement reads. The co-creators of Friends, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, told CNN that “Tyler was a ‘genuinely kind, sweet man.’” Tyler was only supposed to be an extra on the show, but obviously, the creators thought he had more potential. They both said that Tyler had a unique spirit that caught their eye and they knew that they had to make him a character. Little did they know that he’d go on to become one of the most iconic side characters of the show. They also went on to state that “‘He made Gunther's unrequited love incredibly relatable…’” Tyler was able to bring to life a relatable character in a show full of relatable characters; he brought to life the ‘unrequited love for the pretty girl’ cliché. Tyler’s death did not only shock the whole Friends community, but to the cast as well. All six “friends” made their tributes to their co-star. Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green, said, “Friends would not have been the same without you.” David Schwimmer, who portrayed Ross Geller, said that Tyler’s character was “such a wonderful, unforgettable role…” And Courtney Cox, who played Schwimmer’s on-screen sister, Monica, said, “The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you.” Matt LeBlanc, who was Joey Tribbiani, said that they shared lots of laughs and Lisa Kudrow, who’s known for her role as Phoebe Buffay, said, referencing the show’s theme song, “Thank you for being there for us all.” All of the main cast members’ posts discuss how kind Tyler was and how much he will be missed. The official Twitter account for Friends even wrote, “Warner Bros. Television mourns the loss of James Michael Tyler, a beloved actor and integral part of our Friends family. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and fans.” He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno, who his manager has described as “the love of his life.” Appearing in almost 150 of the 236 episodes, Tyler’s character left an imprint on viewers, and his influence continues to this day. I know that as someone who has watched the show in its entirety at least twice, Gunther was one of my favorite side characters. Aniston was right when she said that the show would not be the same without him. I’m sure that myself, as well as many other Friends fans around the world would not be able to imagine the show without the sarcastic coffee shop manager. By Remy Zerber Culture Columnist Taylor Swift is rereleasing her old albums that were under her old record label, Big Machine Records, because Scooter Braun, a manager in the music industry, bought the company. After she was denied the opportunity to own her own music, she decided to leave Big Machine Records and re-record her first six albums with Universal Music Group. Taylor Swift is re-recording her first six albums, Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), and 1989 (2014), and Swifties have come up with many theories regarding the songs on Red and many of her other re-released albums. One theory is that Niall Horan (another singer/songwriter and former One Direction member) is going to do a collaboration with Taylor Swift on Red, that is set to be released on November 19th. Some reasons that fans think he will collaborate with Swift are because they have both praised each other’s music in the past and a potential tracklist circulated online that said that Niall was going to be featured on a song called “Sand Castle.” They also performed together in 2018 during her show at Wembley Stadium and seemed to be having a great time together because their energy during their performance was great, and they both have songs called “Our Song”. Taylor also seemed to be excited about collaborating with other artists on her songs. “Taylor tweeted out that one of the best things about re-releasing her old albums is getting to record never-heard-before tracks with musicians she admires!” wrote an article by Capital FM. It could just be a coincidence that both Swift and Horan have songs called “Our Song,” but most Swifties think it is one of her carefully planned easter eggs. This wouldn’t be surprising because Swift is the queen of planting easter eggs for fans to find leading up to one of her releases. Fans theorize about Swift’s albums a lot. In a recent update, Swift confirmed some fan theories. She confirmed that singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Chris Stapleton, Ed Sheeran, and Foster The People’s Mark Foster would appear on the new album. This would make sense because she is good friends with everyone, specifically Sheeran. She also confirmed that fans correctly guessed the three bonus tracks, which are “Ronan,” “Better Man,” and “Babe”. Swifties also theorized that Olivia Rodrigo is going to be on the album because she was wearing a ring that Taylor gave her in an interview. The ring is similar to the ring that Taylor is wearing in the Red TV album cover. Olivia is also a huge Swiftie and one of Taylor’s friends. However, this theory has yet to be confirmed. I guess we'll just have to wait for the album to find out. Another fan theory is that there is going to be a ten-minute version of “All Too Well” on the album. “All Too Well” is one of Swift’s most popular songs. This is the theory that is most likely to come true because in her instagram post that announced “Red TV” Taylor wrote, "And hey, one of them is even ten minutes long." The only 10-minute song Swifties know about so far is "All Too Well". She also followed the sentence with a red scarf emoji and she sings about a scarf in “All Too Well”. Many fan theories about Red (Taylor’s Version) have been proven true, like the theories that other artists would appear on the new album and fans guessing the names of the three bonus tracks, while some theories are yet to be confirmed, like the theories that Niall Horan and Olivia Rodrigo will be on it. Many fans are excited for the release of Red TV because they will be able to hear some of Swift’s unreleased songs and debunk some theories. |
